The Parenting Buzz : School Days
Today’s subject: School. Today’s buzz:
The issue of who decides whether to keep multiples (twins, triplets, etc.) in the same classroom or in different classrooms is before the Texas State Senate, and on Stroller Derby. Currently, school principals make the decision, but a new Senate Bill would allow parents to have a say. The Bill is expected to pass without opposition;
Two decisions about school uniforms – Blogging Baby reports on a student at Redwood Middle School (in California) is suing her school over its dress code, claiming that it is unconstitutionally vague and too restrictive. On the other side of the pond, RaisingKids reports on new school uniform guidelines being issued by the British government which will give schools the power to ban pupils from wearing full-face veils, citing security, safety and learning issues as grounds for the ban; and
Elsewhere on StrollerDerby, the latest kid craze, Webkinz, is discussed. This new toy craze is causing quite a commotion in schools and has forced one British school to impose a ban on them altogether. The problem lies not with the plush toys themselves, but the online social network that has been created around these furry friends. You see, Webkinz is a sort of Cabbage-Patch-Dolls-Meet-Club-Penguin phenomenon where your plush pet comes with its own “secret code.” Enter the code into the Webkinz website and your child becomes a part of a social network where his/her virtual pet “lives” and interacts with other Webkinz pets. Of course, kids are encouraged to visit the website every day, to ensure that their pet is thriving. The result: instead of using the school computers for class-related purposes, students are using the computers to check in on their pets.
Class dismissed.
